Grayclaw opened her eyes slowly, and stretched out on the soft moss before standing up to shake scraps off her pelt. She padded out of the empty den and went to look for one of her Clanmates, but took the opportunity to arch her back in the warm sunlight first. The clearing was deserted, and Grayclaw sighed before sitting down on the sun-warmed earth to wash herself.
Longtail padded through the forest, a rabbit in his jaws and a smile on his lips. It felt good to be hunting without worrying about being caught. In fact, now he was the one who'd be dishing out the hurt if any pisshat decided to steal prey. Oh, how the tides had turned. The tom prowled over some rocks back to camp and noticed that chick who'd joined alongside him grooming herself. He could respect that. What were tongues for if not for self-grooming? He put down the rabbit. "Mornin' Gray," he meowed with a lazy smirk. Just 'cause he could respect her cleaning didn't mean he was gonna. Besides, he was the Derputy or whatever. What could she do if he wanted to talk to her?
Grayclaw looked up, her tongue frozen in licking the top of her shoulder. She eyed the striped tom curiously. "Good morning, Longtail," Grayclaw mewed politely. Straightening up, she added, "Is that for me?" A cool breeze from somewhere behind her ruffled her pelt, and she quickly licked the fur on her back smooth again.
Longtail. Maybe it was just a loner habit, but the pale tabby suddenly had the urge to tell his clanmate to piss off and find her own damn food. Rabbits were rare in these parts and he'd only gotten it because it was bloated full of water from the lake. He paused, stopping himself from speaking a few choice words. His face twisted a bit, finally ending in a frown. "Ain't all for you, tubbs, but sure take first pick." The tom scowled as he pushed the rabbit towards her with his paw. Someone really ought to tell him about the Warrior Code, honestly.
Grayclaw purred her thanks, before crouching to take a bite out of the rabbit. It was surprisingly good, and she took another bite before straightening up and pushing it back, her eyes full of warmth. She stood and padded past the bitter tom, flicking his shoulder with her tail as she went past. "I'll fetch something nice for you, too." She mewed over her shoulder as she headed towards the lake to hunt. Thank StarClan the weather was cool enough for prey to be plenty this time of year.
Longtail looked away as the she-cat ate. That was his hard-earned food and he just might kick her around for it if he watched her eat. His scowl only deepened at her apparent obliviousness. "Gee thanks," he muttered under his breath after she'd past him and was a good couple fox-lengths away. He frowned at the chewed up rabbit before sighing, rolling his eyes, and picking it up. Ew, gore. With a flick of his tail, the tom crawled into camp to deposit the damn thing. He was about to leave it there when he decided clan be damned. He was hungry from hunting and the rabbit was just going to rot faster now that Gray had tore it open. He turned around and promptly tucked in.
Grayclaw breezed through the lush undergrowth until she reached the lake, then, careful not to let her shadow fall on the surface, she raised a paw over the water, watching for telltale ripples. Patiently, she sat and waited until a minnow darted past, then splashed her paw down into the river and scooped the small fish out of the water. Her opposite paw dealt the killing blow though, and the fish was still. She left it on the bank and returned her attention to the lake again. Grayclaw waded out into the shallows, hoping for something bigger than a minnow. She didn't have to wait very long before a trout swam lazily beneath her. Grayclaw dived under and swam down after it, grabbing the slow-moving fish in her jaws and kicking back to the surface. Wading back to the shore, she picked up her minnow and padded back to camp, feeling rather cut off from the world in the near-silent forest. Seeing Longtail still bent over his rabbit, she padded over to him and purred, "I'm back. Here, I brought you something." She dropped the two fish and pushed the larger trout over to him. Scuffling her paws, she added, "I hope this makes up for your rabbit."
Longtail frowned as he lifted his head to the mauled and bloody mess at his paws. Bits of flesh remained, as he'd been unable to finish off the fat little crapper, and it looked a bit as if the rabbit had exploded leaving a meat-and-bone husk behind. Nasty. He licked his lips, tasting the blood on them, before turning around. And there was Gray. He'd taken that long to eat? "Ta ever so," meowed the cat dryly, wrinkling his nose at the fishy scent. He'd somtimes hunted fish as a loner but damn all this was everywhere. Then he noticed her soaking fur. "You smell like pond piss." Tactful as ever.
Grayclaw's fur had dried a little on the run back, and as she bristled at his blunt words it seemed to dry more. Her eyes stretched wide at his strange and seemingly careless words, but she said nothing, just turned away and shook out her coat where the drops wouldn't shower all over him. Padding back, she nodded to the trout she'd offered him. "Well? Are you going to eat that?" She meowed crisply, her eyes hard.
Longtail's stomach turned as he stared at the fish and he almost felt physically ill. "I just ate a shitload of rabbit, man, just toss it in the food pile." He licked his muzzle again before trotting outside to digest in the sunlight. Wasn't like he was seriously needed at the moment, and if he was. Well. He'd deal with that later or something.
Grayclaw watched him go, hurt showing in her emerald eyes, then shook herself and picked up the trout, dropping it in front of the tree stump where Adderstar had been sitting when she first arrived. She turned back to her minnow, which she devoured in a few gulps, then stared after Longtail, suddenly not wanting to be alone after so many moons of wandering, even if the company was so grouchy, so she followed him outside.
Longtail had just gotten into a nice comfortable position when he heard the she-cat coming out. Rrg. He was far too comfortable and lazy to move, now. In fact, he was too comfortable and lazy to even make a snide comment. The sun was nice and warm and there was a lovely little breeze thing going on. The tom would just lay there, sprawled on his side, completely content to ignore his clanmate unless forced to do otherwise.
Grayclaw watched the handsome tom sprawl onto the grass and make himself comfortable in a patch of sunlight, warmth returning to her gaze. Wordlessly, the gray-furred queen would pad over to him and lay beside his back, folding her paws beneath her and grooming a burr out of his pelt, purring soothingly.
Longtail, breathing deeply, was almost falling asleep when /bam/ sudden physical contact. A typically male nnnnngrrrfff crawled out of his throat like a disgrunted cave-creature and he rolled onto his belly lazily.
Grayclaw shuffled closer, refusing to be put off by the probably-subconcious noise and movement. She hadn't had another cat to care for in ages; she wasn't going to let this one go so easily. She-cat easily resumed her grooming, cracking a flea between her teeth as she cleaned the fur on his neck. At last Grayclaw was satisfied that the tom was adequately clean, and she rolled onto her side with her back against Longtail's side. She stretched out to her full length, closing her eyes, then relaxed, purring, as she wiggled closer to the tom, absorbing his warmth.
Longtail was honestly a bit weirded out by this very very physical display of social interaction. Born a loner, it was somewhat foreign. At any rate, it was keeping him from falling asleep and he let out a breath he hadn't known he'd been holding once she backed off. Maybe now he could take that nap. He subconsciously scooted away from her as she pressed her side against him.
Grayclaw looked up, confused, as the tom moved away again. Surely there were only a certain amount of times it could be subconcious. Disappointment filled her gaze as she sighed and stood before padding back to camp with heavy paws. Her tail drew a furrow in the dirt behind her as she made her way sullenly to her nest to clean out the old moss. Gathering it into two bundles, she padded past Longtail and dumped the moss a way away from him, then set about gathering fresh moss for the den. She'd let him sleep for now, he seemed tired.
